Warning: rapid flashing (~20 Hz) may bother photosensitive users. Rapid cycle is an unproven "fix". Visual inspection only. Prefer reduced motion: leave rapid cycle off unless you need it.

Inspect for dead pixels (dark or missing) and stuck pixels (wrong color). Rapid cycle stays off by default when reduced motion is preferred. Focus the stage, then use arrow or 1–5 keys. Esc exits fullscreen.

Description

About Dead Pixel Test

Introduction

Dead Pixel Test fills the screen with solid colors so you can spot permanently dark or stuck subpixels with your eyes. It is a visual aid, not automated defect detection.

What this tool does

It paints full-screen (or near full-screen) solid fields, lets you cycle colors, and offers a rapid-cycle mode for quicker scanning. Photosensitivity and reduced-motion friendly defaults keep flashing optional and restrained. Dust moves when wiped; fixed dots do not.

When to use it

Use it in return windows, after panel pressure or replacement, and before events on borrowed monitors. Prefer Uniformity Test for blotchy backlight and Color Test for broader primary checks.

How it works

The browser composites solid CSS or canvas fills. Your panel either lights as commanded or shows fixed defects. Fullscreen hides chrome so edge columns are visible. Rapid cycle is an opt-in aid; static fields remain the calm baseline for documentation.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Set the display to native resolution and 100% zoom, then enter fullscreen.
  2. Scan white, then red, green, and blue fields slowly in a grid.
  3. Check black for bright stuck neighbors; wipe the glass if a speck might be dust.
  4. Optionally use rapid cycle, then exit fullscreen when finished.

Common problems

Dust and cleaner residue mimic dead pixels. Phone photos add moiré. Taskbars hide edge defects until true fullscreen. Remote desktop compression invents false sparkles; inspect locally.

Privacy explanation

Patterns render locally. No camera permission is required. Screenshots you take for support stay under your control.

Troubleshooting

Common problems

Quick fixes before you dig into FAQs.

I cannot tell if a speck is a dead pixel
Cycle solid red, green, blue, white, and black full-screen fields. True dead subpixels stay dark on bright fields; dust or smudges move when you wipe the surface gently.
Browser chrome or taskbar covers the edges
Enter fullscreen (F11 or the page fullscreen control), hide OS UI when possible, and pan your eyes along bezels, edge defects are easy to miss in windowed mode.
The page looks fine but my phone camera shows dots
Camera sensors and compression invent artifacts. Trust slow visual inspection of solid browser fields over phone photos for RMA evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Structured answers for users and FAQ rich results.

Browse FAQs
Can this tool find every dead pixel automatically?
No. It paints solid fields for visual inspection. Your eyes (and notes you take) do the detection.
What is rapid cycle mode?
An optional faster color rotation to help scanning. Prefer calm static fields when documenting defects for support.
Dust or dead pixel?
Wipe the glass gently. Dust moves; fixed dark dots on bright fields are candidate dead subpixels.
Is flashing required?
No. Static fields are enough. Rapid cycle is optional, with photosensitivity and reduced-motion minded defaults.
Any upload?
No. Patterns stay local. Screenshots you capture are under your control.
