Introduction
This page estimates heading from device orientation events. Browsers do not provide a fully calibrated magnetic compass to every site. Values can drift and may need a permission prompt on iOS. Expect an approximate direction aid, not surveying-grade north.
What this tool does
It listens for orientation updates and shows an approximate heading when the device provides one.
When to use it
Use it on a phone to see whether orientation events arrive. Use a dedicated compass app for navigation-critical work.
How it works
Supported: many mobile Safari and Chrome builds with sensors. Unsupported: most desktops. Why: PCs lack magnetometers, and mobile browsers gate sensors for privacy. Permissions: motion/orientation on iOS when prompted. Hardware: phone/tablet with sensors. Expected: a changing heading while you rotate, or unsupported on desktop.
Step-by-step instructions
- Open the page on a phone or tablet.
- Allow motion/orientation if the browser asks.
- Rotate the device and watch the heading update.
Common problems
Desktop “unsupported” is normal. Indoors near metal can skew readings.
Privacy explanation
Orientation is processed locally. DeviceHub does not upload heading.
